U.S Musician Used AI to Commit $10 Million Fraud 🤯

Michael Smith, a musician from North Carolina, allegedly used AI tools and tens of thousands of bots to fraudulently stream AI-generated songs, racking up over 4 billion streams and claiming $12 million in royalties since 2019.

• Prosecutors say this is the first known instance where AI has been used in a scheme of this magnitude to manipulate music streaming platforms for financial gain.

• Smith is accused of operating as many as 10,000 bot accounts to stream thousands of AI-generated tracks, evading detection for years. If found guilty, Micheal Smith will spend decades in prison.

• Streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube have been tightening their policies to combat artificial streams. Spotify, for example, now charges labels and distributors per track if artificial streams are detected and has raised the minimum number of streams required for royalties.
